Over 16.56 Lakh Birds Recorded in Odisha Wetlands This Winter

Odisha’s wetlands witnessed an impressive gathering of over 16.56 lakh birds belonging to more than 200 species during the annual mid-winter bird census conducted this year, officials revealed on Sunday.
The census was carried out on Saturday across three major water bodies—Chilika Lake, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Hirakud Reservoir. The exercise involved the participation of over 200 individuals, including forest officials, ornithologists, researchers, and trained volunteers.
Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, recorded the highest influx of avian visitors, cementing its position as a prime wintering site for migratory birds. Bhitarkanika National Park and Hirakud Reservoir also reported significant numbers, showcasing the ecological richness and biodiversity of Odisha’s wetlands.
According to officials, the data collected during the census will play a crucial role in monitoring bird populations, understanding migration patterns, and ensuring better conservation efforts for these habitats.
Wildlife enthusiasts and environmentalists have welcomed the findings, viewing the large bird congregation as an indicator of Odisha’s thriving wetland ecosystems.
