Odisha’s 26 Villages Recognized as ‘Tsunami Ready’ by UNESCOSuccessful Collaboration Builds Disaster-Resilient Communities

Kendrapada, Odisha: In a significant recognition, Odisha’s 26 coastal villages have been officially recognized as “Tsunami Ready” by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO). This acknowledgment highlights the state’s commitment to building disaster-resilient communities, especially ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

The 26 villages, spread across six districts, have undertaken comprehensive preparedness measures. These include the establishment of tsunami warning centres, conducting regular mock drills, training programs, and creating effective evacuation routes. Kaitha village in Kendrapara district recently witnessed a live evacuation simulation involving active community participation, showcasing Odisha’s proactive approach to disaster management.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has played a vital role in supporting these efforts through a 24-hour tsunami monitoring system, ensuring timely alerts and coordinated responses. The collaborative efforts of local authorities, communities, and national agencies have gained both national and international attention.

“This recognition reflects our community’s dedication to disaster preparedness,” said Amlan Anupam Senapati, Dist Project Officer. “Our success serves as a model for disaster resilience, blending technology, education, and community engagement.”

Odisha’s proactive stance in disaster management continues to inspire others, demonstrating that community-based approaches can significantly enhance safety and preparedness.
