Odisha University to Establish Gardens for Endangered and Medicinal Plants
In a significant step towards environmental conservation and educational enhancement, Berhampur University in Odisha has announced the establishment of two dedicated gardens on its campus. These gardens will focus on the preservation of endangered plant species and the cultivation of medicinal plants.
Vice-Chancellor Geetanjali Dash highlighted the dual objectives of this initiative: to protect endangered plant species and to promote the growth of medicinal plants for educational and research purposes in botany. “This initiative not only aims at conserving biodiversity but also at providing an invaluable resource for our students and researchers,” she said.
The university’s decision aligns with broader efforts to address environmental challenges and underscores the importance of preserving plant species that are at risk of extinction. The gardens will serve as living laboratories where students and researchers can study a diverse array of plant species, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to important botanical research.
Dr. Dash also emphasized the educational benefits, stating that access to such a variety of plant species would enrich the learning experience for students. “These gardens will provide a unique opportunity for our students to engage directly with plant biodiversity, enhancing their understanding and fostering a greater appreciation for conservation efforts,” she added.
The initiative has garnered support from various environmental and educational organizations, recognizing the university’s commitment to sustainability and education. The gardens are expected to become a hub for botanical research and a model for other institutions aiming to integrate conservation and education.
Berhampur University’s project stands as a testament to the role educational institutions can play in promoting environmental stewardship and advancing scientific knowledge.
