Odisha to Establish India’s First University for Visually Challenged

The Odisha government is set to pioneer an initiative to establish an international university dedicated to visually challenged individuals, marking a historic first in India. This innovative project aims to provide specialized education and training tailored to the needs of visually impaired students.

Bishnupada Sethi, Principal Secretary of the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD), announced the plan during a recent meeting with a Japanese delegation. The discussions highlighted the state’s commitment to creating an inclusive educational environment for visually challenged individuals.

Sanyasi Behera, Deputy Secretary of SSEPD and himself a visually impaired person, emphasized the significance of the university. “The university will address the specific educational and training needs of visually challenged persons, ensuring they have access to quality education and opportunities,” Behera stated.

The establishment of this university represents a significant step towards enhancing educational access and empowerment for visually challenged individuals across the country. It aims to set a benchmark for inclusive education and create a model that could inspire similar initiatives globally.

The initiative is expected to foster an environment that supports the academic and professional development of visually impaired individuals, providing them with the tools and resources needed to succeed in their chosen fields.
