Odisha Sees Highest Rise in Rural Spending, Punjab Leads in Urban Areas: Govt Survey

Odisha recorded the highest increase in monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) in rural areas, while Punjab topped the list in urban regions between August 2023 and July 2024, according to a government survey.
The Statistics Ministry stated that all 18 major states witnessed an increase in average MPCE in both rural and urban areas during 2023-24. Odisha saw a rise of approximately 14% in rural household spending compared to 2022-23, while Punjab experienced a 13% increase in urban expenditure.
The rise in MPCE reflects improved consumption patterns, economic activity, and overall household spending power in these regions. The government attributes the growth to various welfare schemes, economic revival post-pandemic, and increased earnings among the rural and urban populations.
This trend indicates positive economic momentum, with policymakers closely monitoring consumption patterns to assess future growth prospects.
