Odisha Secures Second Spot in India for Maximum Green Cover Increase in Recorded Forest Areas

Odisha has achieved the second position in the country for the highest increase in green cover within recorded forest areas, as revealed in the latest India State of Forest Report-2023. The report, released by Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav on Saturday, highlights the state’s commitment to forest conservation and green growth.

The biennial report, published by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) since 1987, provides a comprehensive assessment of India’s forest and tree resources. The findings underscore Odisha’s significant contribution to national environmental efforts.

The report indicates that Odisha has witnessed a rise of 118.17 sq km in green cover within its recorded forest areas, second only to Mizoram, which topped the list with an increase of 192.92 sq km.

Officials in Odisha attribute this success to robust afforestation programs, community-driven conservation efforts, and sustainable forestry practices. The state government has consistently prioritized reforestation initiatives and partnerships with local communities to ensure ecological balance.

This recognition places Odisha as a leader in environmental stewardship, reaffirming its role in advancing India’s green agenda. Experts believe the achievement could further bolster the state’s efforts in tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development.
