Odisha on High Alert as Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal Intensifies

The depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression on Sunday and is gradually moving toward the east coast, prompting the Odisha government to issue a statewide alert across all 30 districts, officials said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28.

The storm may bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph, the IMD warned.

The weather office has forecast very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha on October 28 and 29, particularly in the southern and coastal districts. Authorities have been instructed to stay prepared for flooding, waterlogging, and potential power disruptions.

Disaster management teams, including the ODRAF, NDRF, and fire services, have been put on standby. The state government has also asked district collectors to ensure the availability of emergency shelters, food supplies, and medical assistance for affected regions.

Officials urged residents in low-lying and coastal areas to stay alert and follow official advisories, as the situation continues to be monitored closely.
