Odisha MLAs Demand Removal of ‘Ghost’ Beneficiaries from PDS

Odisha’s MLAs, representing various political parties, united on Wednesday in calling for the removal of deceased beneficiaries from the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the inclusion of eligible new recipients.

During the question hour in the state assembly, legislators from the Opposition BJD, Congress, CPI(M), and the ruling BJP voiced their concerns over the issue. They highlighted that the presence of ‘ghost’ beneficiaries—deceased individuals still listed in the PDS database—has led to inefficiencies and mismanagement within the system.

Speaker Surama Padhy also expressed her concern, emphasizing the widespread nature of the problem across the state. “Addressing the issue of deceased beneficiaries is crucial for ensuring that the PDS functions effectively and serves the intended population,” Padhy stated.

The demand for updating the PDS database is seen as a necessary step to improve transparency and ensure that the benefits reach genuine recipients. The assembly’s discussion on this matter reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the efficiency of public welfare systems in Odisha.
