Odisha Launches Campaign Against Drug Trafficking

Odisha to Launch Statewide Awareness Campaign to Curb Illegal Drug Trafficking: Excise Minister Harichandan
Bhubaneswar, May 24 – Odisha is set to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at eradicating illegal drug trafficking and marijuana cultivation across the state, Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced on Saturday.
The initiative will be implemented in coordination with multiple government departments and will use traditional folk performances such as Pala, Daskathia, Goti dance, roadside plays, and school-level essay competitions to educate youth and the general public about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
Harichandan highlighted that illegal drug trafficking has significantly declined since the current government took office, owing to coordinated efforts by the Excise Department, police, and special squads. Regular raids have led to the closure of numerous illegal liquor shops, seizure of large quantities of raw materials and vehicles, and the arrest of several offenders.
“Despite progress, we must intensify our efforts to completely eliminate the illegal drug trade from Odisha,” the minister emphasized during a review meeting.
The awareness campaign is scheduled to run from May 31 to June 26 and aims to reach every corner of the state—from school campuses to village panchayats. Street plays in busy marketplaces and folk art forms will be employed to effectively communicate the harmful effects of drug abuse.
To maximize outreach, mobile awareness vans will operate at district, sub-district, and block levels, with senior officials tasked to coordinate daily activities. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja recommended involving self-help groups and organizing essay competitions on drug abuse in schools to sustain momentum.
Excise Commissioner and Secretary Guha Punam Tapas Kumar added that the “Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs” campaign will be promoted across educational institutions. The state will also utilize digital platforms such as the MANAS portal and the 1933 helpline to report and prevent drug-related crimes.
This multi-pronged approach underscores Odisha’s commitment to creating a drug-free society and safeguarding the health and future of its citizens.
