Odisha Inducts 1,000 High-Yielding Cows Under Go-Palan Yojana to Boost Dairy Sector

Bhubaneswar, May 6 : In a major push to strengthen Odisha’s dairy sector, the state government has inducted nearly 1,000 high milk-yielding cows over the past three months under the Go-Palan Yojana (GPY). The initiative, part of the broader Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana (MKY), is aimed at transforming the livelihoods of small-scale dairy farmers by providing access to superior dairy breeds.

The cows, sourced mainly from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu, are capable of yielding a minimum of 10 litres of milk per day. The scheme offers farmers up to 70% subsidy on the project cost, significantly lowering the financial burden and making high-quality cattle more accessible.

Officials have adopted a transparent procurement process by engaging private suppliers and empowering farmers to choose cows of their preference. This approach has improved beneficiary satisfaction and ensured better results in terms of milk production and economic returns.

The swift rollout of the scheme is also drawing attention. District authorities are reportedly releasing subsidies within 7 to 10 days of project completion, making the program more efficient and attractive, especially for young entrepreneurs, traditional cattle keepers, and livestock enthusiasts.

Kandhamal district has emerged as a standout performer, becoming the first in the state to successfully implement GPY projects for three beneficiaries—all of whom are women dairy farmers, showcasing the scheme’s inclusive impact.

With high-yielding cows now reaching even remote areas, the Go-Palan Yojana is being hailed as a game-changer for Odisha’s dairy economy, offering new hope for sustainable rural livelihoods.
