Odisha Government Halts Opening of New Liquor Shops for the Year
The BJP government in Odisha has announced that no new liquor shops will be opened in the state during the current financial year, according to Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan. The decision is part of an effort to streamline the state’s excise policy.
Harichandan addressed the media on Thursday, explaining that the move aims to manage and control the existing liquor retail environment more effectively. He highlighted that the government is focused on addressing the issue of illicit liquor sales, which remains a significant challenge.
In addition to the halt on new liquor shop openings, the Excise policy will undergo some changes, which are expected to be in effect for the next eight months. These changes are designed to improve regulatory oversight and reduce illegal activities related to alcohol distribution.
The decision reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the management of liquor sales and addressing public concerns related to alcohol consumption and illicit trade.
