Odisha Government Forms New Panel to Supervise Reopening of Ratna Bhandar at Puri Jagannath Temple

The Odisha government has constituted a new high-level committee to oversee the reopening of the Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove) at Puri’s Jagannath temple for the purpose of repairs and inventory of valuables.

According to Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, speaking at a press conference on Thursday night, the formation of this panel aligns with directives from the Orissa High Court.

Previously, in March, the former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government had established a 12-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Arijit Pasayat to supervise the inventory process of jewellery and other precious items stored within the Ratna Bhandar.

The decision to form the new committee underscores the state government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and proper management of the temple’s valuable assets. The Ratna Bhandar, renowned for its historical significance and cultural heritage, holds a collection of priceless treasures associated with the Jagannath temple.

Further details regarding the timeline and operational framework for the reopening and inventory process are expected to be announced following the committee’s deliberations.

This development marks a significant step towards addressing concerns related to the preservation and documentation of the Jagannath temple’s treasures, reflecting the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding cultural heritage.
