Odisha Drivers’ Protest Halts Public Transport

Drivers’ Association Launches Cease Work Stir in Odisha, Public Transport Hit
Public transport services across Odisha were disrupted on Tuesday as thousands of commercial vehicle drivers launched a statewide cease work protest under the banner of the Odisha Drivers’ Mahasangha. The drivers are demanding a pension scheme and rest sheds as part of their long-standing welfare issues.
The protest, which involves drivers of buses, trucks, vans, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and other commercial vehicles, began early in the day, severely affecting private bus operations in several districts, according to officials.
Passengers faced inconvenience as buses remained off the roads in many places, leading to overcrowding at railway stations and bus terminals. Emergency services and some government-run transport were kept operational to mitigate the disruption.
The agitating drivers said they have been ignored for too long and urged the state government to immediately address their demands. “We are demanding a monthly pension, rest sheds along highways, and other basic welfare facilities. Until our voices are heard, we will continue our protest,” said a representative of the Mahasangha.
State authorities have appealed to the protesting drivers to resume services while assuring that their demands will be examined. Discussions between driver union leaders and government officials are expected to be held soon.
The Odisha Drivers’ Mahasangha has warned that the protest may intensify in the coming days if no concrete action is taken by the government.
