Odisha Deputy CM Assures No Immediate Electricity Tariff HikeBhubaneswar, December 24, 2024

Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, K V Singh Deo, has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to raise electricity tariffs in the state, providing much-needed relief to consumers. His assurance follows a proposal by GRIDCO for a tariff hike to Rs 3.82 per unit.

Speaking to the media, Singh Deo stated, “Right now, there is no plan for increasing the energy tariff for anybody.” He clarified that the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) would carefully review the proposal and seek inputs from all stakeholders before making a final decision.

Energy Department Secretary Vishal Dev highlighted that electricity tariffs in Odisha have remained unchanged for the past two years. He assured that the OERC’s decision would balance the interests of consumers and energy providers.

GRIDCO’s Chairman and Managing Director, Trilochan Panda, explained that the proposed hike is a routine measure based on cost estimations and is not designed to burden consumers. He also noted that Odisha’s power purchase cost remains among the lowest in India, second only to Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

The OERC is expected to conduct hearings and deliberate thoroughly before arriving at a decision, which will have implications for the state’s energy sector and consumers alike.
