Odisha Declares Unseasonal Rain a Natural Calamity, Announces ₹291 Crore Relief for Farmers
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has officially declared the unseasonal rain that occurred in December last year as a natural calamity, paving the way for compensation to farmers under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Speaking at the ‘Krushi Odisha Conclave 2025’ held in Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting farmers who faced significant crop losses due to the untimely weather event. “Farmers who have suffered crop damage of 33 percent or more due to the unseasonal rain will be provided assistance in accordance with the relief code,” Majhi stated.
To mitigate the financial burden on affected farmers, the state has earmarked approximately ₹291 crore from the SDRF. This relief will help thousands of farmers recover from the unexpected losses caused by the erratic weather.
Highlighting the importance of safeguarding the agricultural community, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s focus on ensuring timely support during crises. He also assured that the assistance process would be carried out transparently and efficiently.
The unseasonal rain in December caused widespread damage to standing crops, particularly in regions dependent on rabi cultivation. Agricultural experts have attributed the phenomenon to climatic changes, calling for better preparedness and adaptive farming practices to minimize future risks.
The announcement has been welcomed by farmers and agricultural unions, who had been urging the government to recognize the impact of the unseasonal rain and extend relief.
The Odisha government has consistently prioritized farmer welfare, and this latest step underscores its dedication to protecting the backbone of the state’s economy.
