Odisha Approves Financial Aid for Cold Storages

Odisha Launches Financial Assistance Scheme for Cold Storages
Bhubaneswar, January 22, 2025: Odisha cabinet, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved a new scheme titled “Financial Assistance to Cold Storages” aimed at bolstering the state’s cold storage infrastructure. The initiative, which was cleared during the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, seeks to establish cold storage units in all 58 sub-divisions of Odisha, encouraging private entrepreneurs to invest in previously underserved but economically viable locations.
The scheme is designed to enhance farmers’ incomes by reducing post-harvest losses, preventing distress sales, and providing better market opportunities. By linking cold storage units with potential Agriculture Production Clusters (APCs) in their catchment areas, the initiative will also support value addition and processing of agricultural, horticultural, and allied sector produce.
Subsidies for storage and transportation will be provided through the Post-Harvest Management (PHM) scheme under the Directorate of Horticulture. Notably, in cases where multiple applications are submitted for establishing cold storage facilities in the same block, priority will be given to those seeking the least government financial assistance, such as Capital Investment Subsidies.
The scheme has been appraised for a five-year period, from 2025-26 to 2029-30, with a budget allocation of ₹252 crore. Official sources highlight that the initiative will not only address critical gaps in Odisha’s post-harvest infrastructure but also improve the overall supply chain efficiency, benefiting both farmers and consumers.
This landmark initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of Odisha’s agricultural economy, ensuring sustainability and profitability for farmers across the state.
