In a significant milestone for India’s renewable energy sector, the largest floating solar project in central and north India has been commissioned at Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. The project, generating 90 MW of clean energy, was inaugurated on August 8, according to a statement by Madhya Pradesh’s Renewable Energy Minister, Rakesh Shukla.

The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project, built at a cost of ₹646 crores, is not only the largest in the region but also marks a key achievement in India’s drive towards sustainable energy. Developed under the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy, the project is part of a broader initiative to harness solar power while minimizing land use, making it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional solar parks.

Minister Shukla highlighted the significance of this project, noting that it is the largest floating solar installation in central and north India, underscoring the state’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. The solar park is expected to contribute substantially to the state’s energy grid, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting India’s goals for clean energy.

“The commissioning of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project is a proud moment for Madhya Pradesh and the entire nation. This project exemplifies our commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions that align with our global climate goals,” Shukla said.

The project has been strategically developed in the Narmada River reservoir near Omkareshwar, a site chosen for its optimal conditions for solar power generation. The floating solar panels not only generate electricity but also reduce water evaporation from the reservoir, providing additional environmental benefits.

With the successful commissioning of this project, Madhya Pradesh continues to lead in the adoption of renewable energy technologies, paving the way for similar projects across the country.
