Nihal Sarin Climbs Standings but Trails Iranian Daneshvar at Asian Individual Chess Championship
Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin secured his third consecutive win in the Asian Individual Open Chess Championship on Wednesday but continues to trail Iranian leader Bardiya Daneshvar by a full point after the eighth and penultimate round.
Sarin, the tournament’s top seed and a pre-event favourite, defeated fellow Indian Grandmaster S P Sethuraman, showcasing his strong form. However, Daneshvar extended his lead by defeating Indian Grandmaster Abhimanyu Puranik, bringing his score to an unassailable seven points out of eight rounds.
With Sarin likely to face Daneshvar in the final round, the Iranian grandmaster holds a clear advantage and is favourite to clinch the gold medal in the prestigious tournament.
The final round will be crucial as Sarin aims to close the gap and challenge for the title.
