MoS flags delays, charges slowing telecom rollout

Delays, Arbitrary Charges Hindering Telecom Infrastructure Growth: MoS Telecom
Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani has expressed concern over the delays, arbitrary charges, and inconsistent approval processes by local authorities for Right of Way (RoW) permissions, which are impeding the rollout of telecom infrastructure across the country.
Speaking at a meeting with state IT ministers during the India Mobile Congress 2025, Pemmasani said such obstacles are slowing down the expansion of India’s digital network and broadband connectivity goals. He urged states to streamline RoW clearances, operationalize single-window systems, and ensure time-bound approvals to accelerate digital growth.
The minister also emphasized the need for rational, cost-based charges and better coordination with local bodies to maintain uniformity in the approval process.
Highlighting the vision of the National Broadband Mission 2.0, Pemmasani said the government aims to achieve 100 per cent broadband connectivity in all villages by 2030, 80 per cent household broadband penetration, and fibre connectivity to 90 per cent of telecom towers, paving the way for 5G densification and 6G readiness.
He reiterated that collaboration between the Centre, states, and local authorities is crucial to achieving the goal of a digitally empowered and connected India.
