Modi congratulates Karki as Nepal PM

Modi Congratulates Sushila Karki on Taking Oath as Nepal’s Interim PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki on assuming office as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, affirming India’s commitment to supporting the neighbouring nation’s peace, progress, and prosperity.

In a post on X, Modi welcomed Karki’s leadership at a crucial juncture, a day after she was sworn in as Nepal’s first woman prime minister to head an interim government.

Former Chief Justice Karki, 73, took oath on Friday at the President’s Office in Kathmandu, with President Ramchandra Paudel administering the oath of office. Her appointment comes in the wake of the abrupt resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid widespread protests and growing political unrest.

Karki’s elevation marks a historic moment in Nepal’s political journey, making her the country’s first woman prime minister. Her interim tenure is expected to steer the Himalayan nation through a transition period as it seeks political stability after weeks of turmoil.

India and Nepal share close cultural, economic, and strategic ties, and Modi’s swift congratulatory message highlights New Delhi’s keen interest in Nepal’s political developments.
