Top Maoist Leader Sabyasachi Panda Seeks to Pursue MA from Jail

Berhampur (Odisha): Sabyasachi Panda, a top Maoist leader currently serving a life sentence at Berhampur Circle Jail, has expressed his desire to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Administration through the Odisha State Open University (OSOU). Jail authorities confirmed on Wednesday that Panda is among six inmates who have applied for the two-year correspondence program.

Panda, 55, completed his Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) two years ago. His decision to further his education aligns with the jail administration’s efforts to encourage reformation and skill development among inmates.

Among the six applicants, four are convicts, including Panda, while two are undertrial prisoners. The move highlights the growing interest in education within the prison system, facilitated by initiatives like correspondence courses from OSOU.

Prison authorities expressed their support for such endeavors, stating that education can play a significant role in transforming lives and promoting rehabilitation.
