Kharge Slams BJP Over Emergency Narrative

Kharge Accuses BJP of Using Emergency Narrative to Distract from Governance Failures
New Delhi, June 25 : Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Modi government on Tuesday, alleging that the BJP is using the “Emergency narrative” as a diversion tactic to hide its failures in governance, including issues like inflation, unemployment, and corruption.
Speaking at a press conference in the national capital, Kharge said the nationwide ‘Save the Constitution’ campaign led by Rahul Gandhi has rattled the ruling party. “Instead of addressing the real issues faced by the people, the BJP is indulging in theatrics and historical revisionism,” he said.
Kharge accused the BJP of hypocrisy, pointing out that many in the current ruling establishment had no role in the freedom struggle or in framing the Constitution. He alleged that RSS members had previously burned copies of the Constitution and effigies of Ambedkar, Nehru, and Gandhi, claiming the document lacked references to “Manusmriti and traditional culture.”
“The Constitution that they now claim to uphold is the same one their ideological ancestors once disrespected,” Kharge asserted.
Calling the current political climate an “undeclared Emergency,” Kharge accused the Modi government of favoring a few industrialists while ignoring the plight of the poor. “The rich are getting richer and the poor are being pushed further to the margins. The Prime Minister is handing over the country’s wealth to his close friends,” he charged.
Kharge said the BJP’s attempts to revive memories of the 1975 Emergency are aimed at deflecting public attention from ongoing crises. “While Rahul Gandhi is connecting with people across India, energising them to defend the Constitution, Prime Minister Modi is trying to stall the movement with dramatic distractions,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha also raised questions about PM Modi’s silence on repeated claims made by former US President Donald Trump, who has stated multiple times that he prevented a war between India and Pakistan.
“Trump has made this claim 17 times, and yet there hasn’t been a single response from the Prime Minister. Is this the conduct of someone who calls himself a Vishwaguru?” Kharge asked, suggesting that Modi feared confronting Trump.
He also criticised Modi for allegedly endorsing Trump’s re-election campaign during a previous US visit, referencing the slogan “Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar.”
“It’s ironic,” Kharge concluded, “that someone who fails on so many domestic fronts still aspires to be seen as a global hero.”
The remarks come amid a renewed political debate over democracy, constitutional values, and governance, with both the ruling and opposition parties framing the narrative ahead of upcoming legislative sessions and state elections.
