Karan Johar Announces Dharma Productions’ First Punjabi Film ‘Akaal’

Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced that his production house, Dharma Productions, is venturing into Punjabi cinema with its first-ever Punjabi-language film, Akaal. The film is written and directed by Punjabi cinema star Gippy Grewal, who also plays the lead role. The cast includes Nimrat Khaira, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Nikitin Dheer.
Johar expressed his deep emotional connection with the project, stating that he is honoring his late father, veteran producer Yash Johar, and his Punjabi heritage by bringing this film to life. Sharing his sentiments, Johar said, “My father would be proud that this is Dharma Productions’ first Punjabi film.”
The announcement and trailer launch of Akaal coincided with the birthdays of Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar, and Dharma Productions’ CEO, Apoorva Mehta. The filmmaker called it a fitting occasion to introduce the film to the audience.
Dharma Productions, known for its dominance in Bollywood with blockbuster films, is now expanding its reach into regional cinema. With Akaal, the production house aims to tap into the growing Punjabi film industry, which has witnessed significant success in recent years.
