Kal Penn Reflects on Childhood Influences, Dream of Working in India

Hollywood actor Kal Penn, known for his roles in films like Harold & Kumar and The Namesake, recently shared his childhood memories and his dream of working in India, where his love for Hindi cinema began.

In an interview with PTI, Penn, who hails from an Indian-origin background, recalled his visits to Mumbai in the 1980s, where he would watch the process of hand-painting Hindi film posters on billboards. It was during these trips that he developed a deep fascination for Bollywood.

One of the biggest influences on Penn was the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, whose iconic Don poster adorns the walls of Penn’s office in the US. “Don is such a classic, and I have a massive poster, an original poster of Don in my office. It’s huge,” said Penn, who, at 47, dreams of working alongside Indian film greats like Bachchan.

Penn’s admiration for Indian cinema has stayed with him throughout his career. He has often expressed his wish to collaborate with Indian actors and filmmakers, drawing from his early influences and experiences in Mumbai.

His journey from the streets of Dadar to becoming one of Hollywood’s first Indian-origin stars has been one of immense pride for both him and his Indian fans.
