IPL captains raise concerns over Impact Player rule
A majority of captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have expressed reservations about the Impact Player rule, which has remained a subject of debate since its introduction in 2023.
The issue was discussed extensively during the IPL captains’ meeting held in Mumbai, where leaders of all 10 franchises shared their views on the strategic substitution rule.
Despite mixed reactions from players and fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier decided to extend the use of the Impact Player rule in the IPL until at least 2027.
While the rule was introduced to add tactical depth and flexibility to matches, several captains reportedly voiced concerns over its effect on team balance and opportunities for all-rounders.
The ongoing debate highlights differing perspectives within the cricketing fraternity, even as the league continues to experiment with innovations to enhance the format.
