India Prioritizing Core Trade Issues in FTAs for Faster Outcomes: Commerce Secretary

India is focusing on key trade issues such as import duties and non-tariff barriers in its free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations to ensure quicker and more effective results, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Wednesday.

Speaking at an industry event, Barthwal emphasized that prolonged FTA negotiations often lead to a loss of interest among businesses, delaying the benefits of such agreements. By concentrating on core trade matters, India aims to streamline discussions and achieve early outcomes.

“The experience has been that when we look at these free trade agreements, sometimes they take so much time that businesses lose interest,” Barthwal noted.

India is currently engaged in FTA negotiations with multiple countries and economic blocs, seeking to expand market access and strengthen trade relations. The government’s new approach is expected to expedite the process and enhance trade benefits for domestic industries.
