India Increases Palm Oil Imports Festive Season

Indian Importers Boost Palm Oil Purchases Ahead of Festive Season
Indian vegetable oil importers are significantly increasing their palm oil purchases in anticipation of rising demand during the upcoming festival season, aided by a drop in global prices and recent import duty reductions.
According to the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), the move comes as a strategic response to ensure adequate supply and price stability during high-consumption months. “Importers are ramping up palm oil procurement to meet festive demand, taking advantage of lower international prices,” said IVPA President Sudhakar Desai in an interview with PTI.
Desai noted that the Centre’s recent decision to cut the import duty on crude edible oils from 20% to 10% is providing some relief to consumers. “Prices would have been much higher without the duty cut. We saw the impact within two days in loose oils, although it usually takes up to 25 days for the reduction to reflect in packaged oils,” he explained.
He also welcomed the government’s proposed regulatory changes in the vegetable oil sector, which are expected to bring greater transparency and standardization. “The upcoming regulations will help streamline the sector and ensure better quality control,” Desai added.
India, the world’s largest importer of vegetable oils, relies heavily on palm oil imports from Indonesia and Malaysia to meet its domestic consumption needs. With the festive season around the corner, industry stakeholders are hopeful that these measures will help stabilize the market and ease pressure on consumers.
