Grand Budhi Thakurani Yatra Begins Berhampur

South Odisha’s Grand Budhi Thakurani Yatra Begins in Berhampur

The famous Maa Budhi Thakurani Yatra, one of the largest cultural and religious festivals of southern Odisha, commenced in the early hours of Friday amid elaborate security arrangements. The festival, deeply rooted in tradition, will continue until April 28.

The Yatra began with the symbolic arrival of Maa Budhi Thakurani, the presiding deity of Berhampur (Silk City), at her father’s house on Desibehera Street, marking the start of the grand celebrations. This centuries-old ritual holds deep significance for the local community, drawing thousands of devotees from across the state.

On Thursday, P Durga Prasad Desibehera, regarded as the deity’s father, led a ceremonial procession to the Thakurani temple to invite the Goddess. The vibrant event witnessed participation from priests, devotees, and dignitaries, accompanied by traditional music and festivities.

The Budhi Thakurani Yatra is not just a religious event but a grand carnival that showcases Odisha’s rich heritage through folk dances, cultural performances, and street fairs. Authorities have put in place extensive security measures to manage the large crowds expected throughout the festival.

With the city decked up for the occasion, the Yatra promises to be a spectacle of devotion and tradition, continuing to uphold the legacy of Berhampur’s spiritual and cultural vibrancy.
