Govt to Penalize Sugar Mills Violating Limits

Govt to Enforce Strict Penalties on Sugar Mills Violating Stock Limits

The government has warned of stringent action against sugar mills that fail to comply with monthly stock holding limits, the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry announced on Friday.

To prevent hoarding and curb price increases, the ministry sets stock holding limits on white/refined sugar. For April, the limit is fixed at 23.5 lakh tonnes. However, repeated violations by certain mills have led to the issuance of stricter guidelines.

The ministry emphasized that despite previous warnings, some individual and group-owned mills continue to flout regulations. The government is now prepared to impose strict penalties to ensure compliance and stabilize sugar prices in the market.
