Govt permits limited wheat flour exports

Govt allows export of 5 lakh tonnes wheat flour

The government has permitted the export of 5 lakh tonnes of wheat flour and related products, partially lifting a ban that has been in place for over three years, according to an official notification.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in a notification dated January 16, said that while the export of wheat flour and related products will generally remain prohibited, shipments to the extent of 5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) will now be allowed, subject to existing policy conditions.

India had banned wheat exports in 2022 to ensure adequate domestic availability and control prices amid rising global demand and supply concerns. The latest decision marks a calibrated easing of restrictions as domestic supply conditions improve.

Officials said the move is expected to benefit exporters and flour millers while maintaining sufficient stocks for domestic consumption. India is among the world’s major producers of wheat, and the partial relaxation is aimed at balancing farmers’ interests, export opportunities and food security considerations.

The DGFT said detailed operational guidelines for the permitted exports will be issued separately.
