Government Sanctions Pilot Projects for Green Hydrogen in Steel Production
As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Union Government has approved three pilot projects aimed at integrating hydrogen technology into steel production. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to advancing clean energy and reducing carbon emissions in the steel sector.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy previously issued guidelines for implementing these pilot projects, focusing on identifying advanced technologies for using green hydrogen in steelmaking. The projects will demonstrate the safety and feasibility of hydrogen-based processes, evaluate their economic viability, and pave the way for low-carbon iron and steel production.
The sanctioned pilot projects include:
- Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd (in collaboration with Gensol Engineering Ltd, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB, Sweden) with a pilot plant capacity of 50 tons per day (TPD).
- Simplex Castings Ltd (with partners BSBK Pvt. Ltd., Ten Eight Investment, and IIT Bhilai) with a capacity of 40 TPD.
- Steel Authority of India Ltd in Ranchi, with a substantial capacity of 3200 TPD.
The government has allocated a total financial support of ₹347 crore for these projects, which are expected to be commissioned within the next three years. This development is a crucial step toward scaling up green hydrogen technologies in India.
Launched on January 4, 2023, with an outlay of ₹19,744 crores until FY 2029-30, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India self-reliant through clean energy. The mission is set to significantly decarbonize the economy, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in green hydrogen technology and markets.
These pilot projects mark a pivotal move towards sustainable steel production, contributing to the global clean energy transition and aligning with India’s broader environmental goals.
