GJEPC Calls for Stringent Rules on Diamond Disclosure

The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has urged the Indian government to implement strict regulations requiring traders to clearly disclose whether diamonds are natural or lab-grown. This request was communicated to the Department of Consumer Affairs as part of the council’s effort to enhance transparency in the diamond industry and safeguard consumer interests.

In its communication, the GJEPC highlighted the necessity of clear and standardized guidelines to prevent ambiguity in the marketing of diamonds. The council emphasized that such measures are crucial for protecting consumers and upholding the integrity of the domestic industry, which has been facing challenges due to a lack of clear regulations.

The GJEPC also noted the prevalent misuse of terminology in the advertising and marketing of lab-grown diamonds in India, which can mislead consumers and create confusion in the marketplace. By advocating for these stringent rules, the GJEPC aims to ensure that consumers are well-informed about the products they purchase, promoting fair trade practices and fostering trust in the diamond industry.
