Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Embarks on Official Visit to USA and Peru
Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, will begin an official visit to the United States and Peru from April 20 to 30, 2025, aimed at strengthening economic engagements, fostering bilateral ties, and promoting India’s global economic vision.
During her visit to the United States, Smt. Sitharaman will travel to San Francisco and Washington D.C. from April 20 to 25. In San Francisco, the Finance Minister is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution on the theme “Laying the Foundations of Viksit Bharat 2047”, followed by a fireside chat. She will also engage with leading fund managers and CEOs from top IT companies in a roundtable discussion and hold bilateral meetings. An interaction with the Indian diaspora in San Francisco is also on the agenda.
In Washington D.C., Smt. Sitharaman will participate in the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the 2nd G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting, and other key multilateral platforms including the IMFC Plenary, Development Committee Plenary, and the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR).
On the sidelines of these events, the Finance Minister will hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts from countries including Argentina, Bahrain, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and the USA. She will also meet representatives from major international financial institutions including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the European Union.
The second leg of the visit will take Smt. Sitharaman to Peru from April 26 to 30, marking her first official visit to the country. She will lead an Indian delegation comprising officials from the Ministry of Finance and business leaders. During her stay in Lima, the Finance Minister is scheduled to call on President H.E. Ms. Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Gustavo Adrianzén of Peru, and hold bilateral meetings with Peruvian ministers handling portfolios such as Finance, Economy, Defence, and Energy & Mines.
She will also chair the India-Peru Business Forum, aimed at promoting trade and investment ties. In view of Peru’s strategic role in the global supply of critical minerals and precious metals, discussions are expected to explore collaborative opportunities in the mining sector to enhance India’s resource security and value-chain integration.
Smt. Sitharaman will also interact with Indian businesses and investors operating in Peru, as well as address the Indian diaspora in Lima during a community event.
This visit underscores India’s growing economic diplomacy and its proactive role in engaging global partners in multilateral and bilateral forums.
