Engineering Student Commits Suicide After Losing Lakhs in Online Game
Kendrapara, May 28 : A tragic incident unfolded in Odisha’s Kendrapara district as an engineering student took his own life after reportedly losing several lakhs of rupees in online gaming. The case falls under the jurisdiction of the Kudanagari police station.
The deceased, Sahil Kumar Jena, 18, was a resident of Bangari village and a second-year engineering student at the Nalanda Institute of Technology, Chandaka. Sahil had been secretly playing online games for over six months without his family’s knowledge.
Reports revealed that Sahil had incurred heavy financial losses through online gaming, with his losses reaching a critical point during his summer vacation. On Monday, he reportedly lost an additional Rs. 96,000, which deeply distressed him.
In a state of despair, Sahil consumed pesticide stored in his home. He was rushed to Patkura Community Health Centre (CHC) for immediate treatment but tragically succumbed to the poisoning while being transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The police have registered the case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. This tragic event highlights the growing concerns over the impact of online gaming addiction and financial losses among youth.
