DRDO, Army Successfully Test MRSAM System

DRDO & Indian Army Successfully Test Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile System

In a major boost to India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army successfully conducted four flight-tests of the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) Army version on April 3 and 4, 2025. The tests were conducted from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.

Missile System Demonstrates Precision & Operational Readiness

The four operational flight-trials were carried out against high-speed aerial targets, successfully intercepting and destroying them in direct hits. The tests validated the system’s effectiveness in engaging targets at long-range, short-range, high-altitude, and low-altitude, demonstrating its full operational capability.

The missile trials were conducted under real operational conditions, with advanced tracking systems such as radars and electro-optical sensors at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur capturing critical flight data. The tests were overseen by senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Army.

Strengthening Army’s Defense Readiness

The trials were executed by Army units from the Eastern and Southern Commands, under DRDO’s guidance, proving the system’s readiness for deployment. The success of these tests paves the way for operational induction of the MRSAM system in two Army Regiments, significantly enhancing India’s air defense capabilities.

MRSAM: A Joint Indo-Israeli Defense Collaboration

The MRSAM Army weapon system is jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for the Indian Army. The system comprises:

  • Multi-function radar
  • Command and control post
  • Mobile launcher system
  • Other supporting vehicles

This advanced air defense system is designed to neutralize aerial threats, including enemy aircraft, drones, and missiles, at critical ranges.

Leaders Applaud the Milestone

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, and industry partners for the successful trials. He stated that the four successful tests reaffirm India’s capability to intercept aerial targets at critical ranges.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, commended the teams involved, calling the successful trials a major milestone in strengthening the Indian Army’s operational preparedness.

With these successful tests, the MRSAM Army weapon system is set to be a game-changer in India’s air defense, ensuring superior protection against airborne threats and reinforcing the country’s defense infrastructure.
