Dr. Tyagi Highlights Nuclear Energy’s Importance

Nuclear Energy Key to Clean Power and Sustainable Development: Dr. A.K. Tyagi
Bhubaneswar: In the face of intensifying climate change and global environmental challenges, nuclear energy must play a pivotal role in clean power generation, said Dr. A.K. Tyagi, renowned nuclear scientist and Dean at the Homi Bhabha National Institute, Trombay.
Delivering a distinguished lecture organized by the Odisha chapter of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University, Dr. Tyagi stressed the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and highlighted nuclear power as a reliable, low-carbon energy source capable of supporting sustainable development.
“The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has already risen from 320 ppm to 430 ppm. If it reaches 450 ppm, the situation will become alarming,” Dr. Tyagi warned, urging immediate action to adopt clean energy solutions.
Citing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Tyagi noted that nuclear energy can directly contribute to at least eight of these goals. He emphasized that nuclear power causes far less pollution compared to coal and other fossil fuels, making it essential for environmental sustainability.
While acknowledging India’s limited uranium reserves, Dr. Tyagi underscored the country’s vast thorium deposits as a valuable alternative for long-term nuclear energy solutions. He called for the advancement of thorium-based technologies and small modular reactors (SMRs) to enhance efficiency and safety in nuclear power generation.
Dr. Tyagi, who is also the former Director of the Chemistry and Bioscience Groups at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), highlighted the versatile applications of nuclear science beyond energy, including its significant contributions to agriculture, healthcare, and material sciences. He cited the use of radioisotopes in cancer treatment and diagnostic imaging, as well as radiation processing for food preservation.
Emphasizing the critical role of nuclear technology in combating climate change and achieving energy independence, Dr. Tyagi concluded that a strong national commitment to nuclear science and innovation is essential for securing India’s sustainable and energy-resilient future.
