Dipa Karmakar Urges Young Gymnasts to Embrace Passion for the Sport

In a candid reflection on the state of gymnastics in India, recently retired star Dipa Karmakar expressed concern that the current generation of gymnasts lacks the passion necessary for success on the global stage.

Dipa, who made history as the first Indian woman gymnast to compete in the Olympics and finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Games, emphasized the importance of fervor in excelling in the sport. Speaking about her own journey, she noted that her dedication and “junoon” (passion) were crucial to her achievements, as well as those of fellow gymnast Pranati Nayak.

“There was junoon in Dipa, that is why. Same for Pranati,” she stated, highlighting the rarity of such passionate dedication among Indian women gymnasts today. Dipa’s remarkable career, particularly her mastery of the challenging Produnova vault, has inspired many young athletes, but she believes a deeper commitment to the sport is essential for future success.

As she steps away from competition, Dipa hopes her message resonates with aspiring gymnasts, urging them to embrace their passion and work tirelessly to achieve their dreams in gymnastics.
