Centre Orders Insurance Firm to Pay Rs 225 Cr to Maharashtra Farmers

The Central government has issued a directive for an insurance company to settle pending claims amounting to Rs 225 crore to approximately 2 lakh farmers in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district within a week.

This decision follows a recent engagement between Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and farmers in Nanded on August 21, where concerns regarding delayed soyabean crop insurance claims were highlighted.

On August 22, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare convened a meeting of the National Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to address these issues. The TAC dismissed the insurance company’s objections related to crop-cutting experiments and mandated the swift resolution of the pending claims.

The government’s intervention aims to alleviate the financial strain on farmers who have been awaiting compensation for their losses. This move is expected to provide significant relief and support to the affected agricultural community in Maharashtra.
