Acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has announced his next major cinematic venture, Jai Somnath, which will be directed by noted filmmaker Ketan Mehta. The historical drama is slated for release in 2027.

According to an official press release, Jai Somnath revisits the events of 1025–1026 CE, when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and plundered the revered Somnath Temple. The episode remains a significant chapter in Indian history. This year marks 1,000 years since the Ghazni invasion and the destruction of the temple, as well as its subsequent reconstruction — a process that came to symbolise resilience and cultural continuity.

The makers describe Somnath as embodying the indestructible spirit of India and the enduring glory of Indian civilisation. The film aims to capture both the historical magnitude of the invasion and the emotional and spiritual significance of the temple’s revival.

The project will be produced under Bhansali Productions in collaboration with Maya Movies. Apart from directing, Mehta will also serve as a writer on the film.

Known for his grand visual style and epic storytelling, Bhansali’s collaboration with Mehta has already generated considerable buzz in the film industry. With its historical backdrop and ambitious scale, Jai Somnath is expected to be one of the most anticipated period dramas of 2027.
