Assistant Commercial Tax Officer, 2 Others Held in Odisha for ₹4 Crore Fraud

Odisha’s vigilance wing arrested an assistant commercial tax officer (ACTO) and two others for their alleged involvement in a financial fraud exceeding ₹4 crore, officials said on Friday.

The arrests came after evidence surfaced of their role in misappropriating government funds through the abuse of official power at the Commercial Tax (CT) and GST office in Bhubaneswar. The accused allegedly orchestrated the fraudulent refund of VAT and disbursed ₹4.03 crore illegally.

The vigilance department revealed that Satyaki Pattanaik and Deeptikanta Choudhury, in collaboration with CT & GST officials, filed forged appeals on behalf of a firm to siphon off ₹4,03,09,723.

“During the investigation, it was found that forged documents and fabricated appeals were used in the process, leading to the misappropriation of funds,” the vigilance said in its statement.

The department has initiated further inquiries into the case, aiming to uncover any additional accomplices or misconduct within the office.
